HELD: A Chronic Illness Processing Group
An affinity group centered on BIPOC adults carrying chronic illness and everything that comes with it.
Six weeks. Small group. Virtual. Tuesdays at 2 PM Eastern, beginning October 6.
LIVING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS IN A BODY THAT THE WORLD ALREADY MISREADS IS ITS OWN KIND OF TIRED
There is the illness itself. Then there is everything around it. The appointments where you have to prove you are in pain. The people who mean well and say the wrong thing. The version of yourself you were before, and the grief of not being her anymore. The quiet math you do every morning about how much you can spend today.
Held is a six week therapy group for BIPOC adults carrying both chronic illness and the mental health weight that comes with it. We meet for one hour a week, on video, in a small closed group of no more than eight people.
Together we work on what it means to live in a body that asks more of you than you were prepared to give. We spend time with the nervous system and why staying on guard makes sense when your body has been dismissed. We look at boundaries, including the ones your energy sets for you whether you agree to them or not. We map who is actually holding you and who might be missing. And we push back on the idea that your worth is measured by what you can produce.
If you are not BIPOC and this group speaks to you, you are welcome to express interest. What I ask is that you come with a clear understanding of what you would be joining. The center of this group does not shift to accommodate, and part of our conversation before the group begins will be about whether you can be genuinely supported in a space that is not built around your experience. That is a fit question, the same as every fit question, and we will figure it out together honestly.
This is a processing group, not a class. There is no curriculum you have to keep up with and nothing to fall behind on. It is a place to set some of it down for an hour, in the company of people who do not need it explained.
WHAT AN HOUR LOOKS LIKE
Most people who join have never experienced group therapy before. Here's what to expect.
We arrive together.
Each session begins with a short grounding practice to help you settle in.
We explore something practical.
A brief teaching or tool to help you better understand yourself, your body, and your patterns.
We make space for what matters.
Most of our time is open and shaped by what the group needs that day.
We close together.
Before you return to the rest of your day, we take a moment to land.
And you never have to talk before you're ready.
Listening and simply being present are ways of participating, too.
THE SHAPE OF THE SIX WEEKS
Arriving. What it is like to be in a body that asks more of you than you have. We get to know each other and find a way for you to feel steadier in your own system.
Week One
The nervous system. Why staying on guard makes complete sense when your body has been dismissed, and what the difference is between actually being calm and being too tired to feel anything.
Week Two
The parts of you that manage all of this. The one who pushes through. The one who is furious at your body. The one who handles everyone else's feelings about your illness so they do not have to.
Week Three
Grief. The version of yourself from before, and what it means that you have not really let yourself mourn her.
Week Four
Capacity and boundaries, including the ones your energy sets for you whether you agree to them or not.
Week Five
Week Six
Who is actually holding you, who might be missing, and what you are taking with you.
WHO THIS IS FOR
You might recognize yourself here.
You are a BIPOC adult living with a chronic illness or condition. Maybe you have had a name for it for years, or maybe you are still fighting to get one. You are managing your mental health alongside it, and some days you cannot tell where one ends and the other starts.
You are tired of translating your body for people who do not believe you. You have gotten very good at seeming fine. You may have a strong sense that you are supposed to be strong, and a quieter sense that it is costing you something.
You want to be around people who get it without the preamble.
WHO THIS IS NOT FOR RIGHT NOW
I want to be honest about this part, because the wrong fit can hurt.
This group is not the right place if you are currently in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself. A one hour weekly group cannot hold that safely, and you deserve care that can.
It is also not the right fit if you need weekly individual therapy as your main support and do not have that in place, or if what you are primarily looking for is a space to process racial trauma. Race is welcome here and we will name it honestly when it comes up, but the center of this group is chronic illness and care.
If any of that is you, reach out anyway. I will help you find something that fits better.
THE DETAILS
1
Format
Virtual, on secure video
Six sessions. 2:00 to 3:00 PM Eastern Time. October 6, 13, 20, and 27, then Thursday November 5, November 10th then Tuesday November 17 as a “graduation celebration”.
2
Dates & Time
A note on November 5
Our fifth session moves to Thursday that week so it does not fall on Election Day. Everything else stays on Tuesdays
3
Eight members maximum. Once we begin, the group closes after week 3 and no new members join after that. Members have 2 weeks to assess fit for them.
4
Size
$270 for the full six-week series. You can pay it all at once before we begin, or $45 a week across the six sessions, whichever is easier on your budget. Either way, the total is the same.
If you need to withdraw, you can withdraw after the first session and be released from the remaining five, or after the second session and be released from the remaining four. If you paid up front, you will be refunded for those sessions. Starting with the third session, you are responsible for the full $270 whether you paid up front or weekly.
That line is not really about money. By week three, this group has formed, people have taken real risks with each other, and someone leaving changes the room for everyone still in it. Choosing the weekly option does not make you less enrolled; it just spreads out your payments.

Cost
Insurance
6
This group is self-pay only. You will receive a written Good Faith Estimate before we begin, so the cost is clear in writing before you commit to anything.
Where You Need To Be
You must be physically located in Maryland or Virginia during each session. This is a licensing requirement, not a preference. It is about where you are sitting, not where you live.

HOW TO JOIN
01
Fill out the interest form below. It is short and it does not ask you anything about your health.
02
We will reach out within two business days to schedule a short conversation with me. This is how we figure out together whether this group is the right fit for you right now. It is not a test. It is also a chance to ask me anything you want to ask.
03
If it is a fit, you will complete intake paperwork through our client portal and your spot is held.
GOT QUESTIONS?
-
No. You do not need a formal chronic illness diagnosis, and plenty of us spend years being told nothing is wrong. What matters is that you are living with an ongoing health condition that affects your daily life.
There is also no mental health diagnosis attached to joining this group. Because it is entirely self-pay and I am not billing insurance, there is nothing that has to be coded, submitted, or justified to anyone.
-
You can express interest, and I want to be honest with you about what you would be stepping into.
Held is an affinity group. It was created for and is centered on BIPOC adults, because people of the global majority carry chronic illness inside systems that disbelieve, dismiss, and under-treat them in ways their white counterparts largely do not experience. That reality is not a side topic in this group. It is the center, and it stays the center.
If you can sit in a room that is not built around your experience, without needing it to be, there may be space for you here. That is exactly what the conversation before the group begins is for. We will talk it through directly, and we will both be honest about whether this is the right room for you. If it is not, I will help you find one that is.
-
No. This group is self-pay only. I do not bill insurance for it and I do not provide superbills, so there is nothing to submit for reimbursement.
I know that makes it less accessible for some people and I want to be straightforward about the tradeoff rather than implying a reimbursement that may never come. Insurance reimbursement for out of network group therapy is unpredictable at best, and going this route means nothing about this group ends up in an insurance record.
-
Yes. $270 up front, or $45 a week for six weeks. Same total, same commitment, whichever is easier on your budget.
Paying weekly does not make you any less enrolled. You are still signing up for all six sessions, and the withdrawal terms are the same either way. It just means the cost lands in smaller pieces.
-
It is a written breakdown of what a service will cost you, which health care providers are required to give people paying out of pocket. Yours will say $270 for six sessions, and it will note whether you are paying up front or weekly. There is nothing hidden in it and nothing else you will be charged.
-
You will not be penalized for your body. Flares happen and this group is built for people whose bodies are unpredictable.
That said, this is a small closed group and your presence matters to the people in it. I ask that you plan to attend all six weeks and let us know when you cannot make it. If you end up missing more than two sessions, we will talk about whether it makes more sense for you to join a future group instead.
-
You can, and how much you owe depends on when.
After the first session, you are released from the remaining five. After the second, the remaining four. If you paid up front, you get that money back. If you are paying weekly, you simply stop.
From the third session forward, you are responsible for the full $270 either way. That is the same whether you paid all at once or week to week, because the two options are the same commitment with a different payment schedule.
I want to be honest about why that cutoff exists. It is not really about the money. By the third week the group has become a specific group of specific people who have started trusting each other. Someone leaving at that point is felt by everyone. The window closing is my way of asking you to decide early, so that if you do stay, you are staying.
If something happens that no one could have planned for, tell me. I would rather talk about it than have you disappear.
-
No, and I want to keep these separate.
Missing a session because your body had other plans is not withdrawing. You stay enrolled, your spot stays yours, and there is no financial penalty. That is built into how this group works.
Withdrawing means you are leaving the group and not coming back. That is when the refund policy applies.
-
No. Camera on, camera off, sitting up, lying down, in bed, with a heating pad, in the dark. However your body needs to be is how you should be. This is built into how the group runs from the first session.
-
Somewhere private. That means somewhere the people in your life cannot overhear what is being said, including what other members say. Not in public, not while driving.
I know private is not equally available to everyone. If your living situation makes this hard, tell me during our conversation and we will work it out. Headphones solve most of it. So does timing, or a closed door.
-
Mostly, and I want to be precise about the part that is not.
I am bound by law and by my license to keep everything you share confidential, with the usual exceptions around serious risk of harm. That part is enforceable.
Every member also agrees, in writing, that what is said in the group and who is in it stays in the group. That agreement is real and people take it seriously. But I cannot promise you what another person will do the way I can promise you what I will do. Any therapist who tells you otherwise is overselling it.
What I can tell you is that I take it seriously enough to act on it. If I learn that someone has shared another member's identity or story outside this group, they will not be able to join any future group at Village of Sound Mind. That is not a warning I expect to use. I am telling you about it because you deserve to know that the agreement has weight behind it.
We talk about this directly in the first session, and you get to decide what you share and when.
-
No. Not by me, and not in this room.
Most of us are on something. Pain medication, muscle relaxers, steroids, sleep aids, cannabis where it is legal, something to take the edge off the anxiety of living in an unpredictable body. Some of it is prescribed and some of it is not, and most of us have been questioned, second-guessed, or made to feel like a suspect about it by someone whose job was supposed to be helping.
That is not going to happen here. You do not owe this group an explanation of your medication, your dosing, or how you got through today.
The only thing I ask is that you are able to actually be here. If you are so out of it that you cannot follow what is happening or would not remember it afterward, this hour is not going to do anything for you, and being in a room where other people are being vulnerable while you are not really present is not fair to them. If that happens, I will reach out to you privately, not call it out in group. It is a conversation, not a punishment.
If at some point you find yourself using something in a way that worries you, you can say that here. It will be met with care, not alarm. And if it turns out you need more support than a weekly group can give, I will help you find it rather than leaving you to figure it out alone.
-
Come anyway.
There is a difference between a bad day and not being able to be present. Foggy, exhausted, in pain, half-asleep, unable to think of words, crying, lying flat on the floor. All of that is welcome and none of it needs to be explained.
If it is really not a day you can be in a group, it is okay to say so and go rest. That is not failing at this. But I would rather you come and say almost nothing than decide in advance that you are not well enough to deserve the hour.
-
Eight at most. Some weeks fewer, because bodies are unpredictable and people have appointments and flares.
Eight is small on purpose. It is enough people that you are not the only one carrying the conversation, and few enough that there is actually room for you in an hour.
-
No, and this is one of the few places I do not have flexibility.
Once we begin on October 6, the group closes. Nobody new joins after that, including in week two. The reason is that what makes this work is the same eight people showing up week after week until it becomes safe enough to be honest. A new person arriving in week four resets that for everyone, including the person who took a risk the week before.
If the timing does not work for you, tell me anyway. There will be another group and I will let you know when.
-
Yes, and you will get all of them in writing before we start so nothing is a surprise.
The short version. What is said here and who is here stays here. No recording of any kind. You need to be somewhere private, which means somewhere the people in your life cannot overhear. You need to be physically in Maryland or Virginia. Speak from your own experience rather than telling other people what to do. And I will not let anyone be treated with contempt in this room.
We go through the full set together in our first session, and there is room for the group to add its own agreements.
-
While the group is running, I ask that members not exchange contact information, add each other on social media, or meet up outside of group.
I know that can feel strange in a group that is partly about not being alone in this. Here is the reasoning. When some members are talking outside the room and others are not, the group stops being one group. Things get processed in private that needed to be in the room, and the people who are not in those conversations feel it even if nobody says anything.
After the six weeks are over, staying in touch is entirely up to you. We will make space in the last session to talk about how.
-
Yes, and it is completely optional.
Your individual work with me is not affected in any way by whether you join this group. Not the scheduling, not our relationship, nothing. Please do not feel any pressure. If you are interested, fill out the form the same as anyone else and we will talk it through.
-
Then I cannot legally work with you in this group, even virtually. I am licensed in Maryland and Virginia only, and where you are physically sitting during the session is what determines that.
Fill out the form anyway and I will send you directories where you can find a therapist licensed where you are.
-
Not quite, though the difference is more about how it runs than about what it is worth.
A support group is usually peer led. People with a shared experience holding space for each other, without a clinician steering it. Those groups are valuable and they save lives.
This one is facilitated by me. I am a licensed clinical social worker, and I am not just hosting the conversation. I am tracking what is happening in the room, keeping it steady when it gets heavy, and making sure it stays safe for everyone in it. There is a conversation with me before you join, and that is part of the same job.
It is therapy, in a group, run by a therapist. It is just not run through insurance.
-
Most people in this group will not have. You are not expected to know how to do this. You are not required to share anything you are not ready to share, in the first week or ever. Sitting quietly and listening is a real way to be in a group.
-
Ask me. You can email admin@villageofsoundmind.co and we will get it to me, or you can save it for our conversation before the group starts. There is no question that is too small or too practical, and if something is making you hesitate, I would rather hear it than have you decide quietly that this is not for you.
